This is a good adaptation of a great book, and I think that this is probably as good as can be hoped for on film, but its best attributes are also its flaws. It’s removed and tightly wound and everyone is always frowning, which allows the viewer to view things in a heavily stylized way but also makes it difficult to have an emotional connection. The beautiful photography is pleasing to look at but also another reason to be aesthetically motivated and not emotionally. It’s not a bad film by any means. It’s pretty good actually, but stuffy British movies about stuffy British people are hard to get excited about.
