50/50 is a movie about cancer that is really funny, and no it’s no offensive. It deals with an enormously painful thing with unwavering humor and optimism without ever sacrificing realism. That’s quite a feat. Another thing I love about this movie: the characters. You feel the main character’s pain every time he faces death. You recognize his friend’s affection and humor in a lot of the guy friends you know. You see his mother and realize your mother would react in almost exactly the same way. You see his girlfriend and you feel his anger towards her but not enough to completely dismiss sympathy. 50/50 is that movie you see every once awhile that makes you thankful to be alive. It makes you appreciate your parents more, hug your friends harder, and remember what it’s like to feel boundless warmth.
