This is a good movie. Let’s get that part out of the way here. The acting is amazing, and it’s heartfelt and honest and doesn’t pull any punches. Those are all good things, and those are all things that might win some Oscars(and deservedly so). My issue here is just that this movie falls much more flat than I expected. This guy made Sideways and About Schmidt and Election. Where is the humor and emotion permeating every scene? I didn’t get that feeling of seamless scene to scene transition as if I am watching one fluid work. I got some scenes that were truly extraordinary, and a lot of other scenes that I’m still trying to derive purpose from. This often feels uninspired, and I know I am in the minority here. Critics can’t pile enough praise on this one, but as likeable as a lot of it is, I just can’t say it’s a great film. It’s worth seeing for sure, but don’t expect fireworks.
