Oh what can I say about Melancholia that I can’t say about most short stories written by thirteen year old girls? Well sure the acting is pretty good. I’ll say that. It’s filmed nicely and the shots are very beautiful, but….the praise ends there. This movie seems to be the product of a tripping ego. Someone arrogant enough to think he has all the answers for humanity and that you should thank him for bestowing his genius on you. Like he’s revealing some secret that will help you live your life. Von Trier’s arrogance drowns Melancholia in an overblown plot and obviousness masquerading as intelligence. Melancholia is a miserable movie, but it gives you no real reason to feel its misery. There’s nothing here worth learning, nothing worth seeing, and it’s impossible to love this movie as much as it loves itself.
