I guess the main thing I can say for the Artist is that it’s just a delight to watch. I’m hesitant to call it a great film, honestly. I don’t think it is. I think it appeals to what we most want to see and gives us a pleasing, warm story about failure, success, and redemption. It’s not a hard film to get behind, and I’m not sure I’ve seen a film this intrinsically likeable in a long time, but that’s where it ends. The endless praise for this movie is slightly baffling to me, because I don’t think there is anything truly transcendent or even masterful here. I think it’s audacious in some ways, and it’s well acted, and it’s certainly very enjoyable. If you expect a nice night out at the movies, this one surely won’t disappoint.
